When painting any bedroom you want to make sure that you are doing it properly. The room would look tacky and odd if you were to paint it in such a way that it looked blotchy or uneven. Although it might be a long and drawn out process in the end you can stand back and be happy with the outcome of it all.
Choosing Paint
One of the hardest parts to this job is knowing what type of paint you will need to use. It is better to spend $30 on a paint that is thicker and has the ability to be washed when anything gets on it than to spend $15 on a paint that is thinner and will take you twice as long to apply and cannot be touched by water. You will discover that it is better to invest in the more expensive and higher quality paint to help save you time and money.
Supplies
You can pick up the paint at your nearest home improvement store. Along with this you will also need basic supplies including two large rollers, a paint pan, quality paintbrush, painter’s tape, and a large sheet. There are several different types of rollers that you can use. We prefer the ones made with polyester fabric because they are thick enough to apply the paint evenly and will not wear out as quickly.
The paintbrush is used to edge the baseboards, windows, outlets, and ceilings. Because of this you need to find the kind that has soft bristles and is curved on one side. It is slightly more expensive – but it is the easiest thing to help you edge.
Preparation
Before you begin painting you need to wash off the walls and remove any dust and stains. After this remove any screws or nails and move out all of the furniture. The holes will need to be filled in with putty. When the room is cleared and cleaned you can put the painter’s tape along the edge of the baseboards, windows, and outlets. This will prevent any paint from getting on them. Now lay down the blanket against the first wall to keep paint from getting on the carpet.
Painting
Start painting the walls using the roller brush. The biggest mistake that people make during this process is moving the roller straight up and down against the wall. To cover more area and use less paint you want to create a long ‘X’ pattern. This will also prevent the paint from becoming blotched and uneven. Another mistake that people will make is to apply too much pressure against the wall. This will case the polyester fabric to become matted down – which will wear it out quicker.
When you have covered the majority of the walls with paint you will be ready to move on to edging. The biggest problem you will have with this is trying to paint inside of the lines and to avoid touching the baseboards and ceilings. Remove the tape and use your edging paintbrush. Only put a small amount of paint on the brush and apply it to the wall with the curved portion moving slowly along the edge of the baseboard or ceiling. The more you do this the easier it will become.
